Sciatica is a common syndrome applied when pain is experienced along the route of Sciatica Nerve. that is the buttock, back of the thigh, outer side and back of the leg and the outer border of the foot.
The condition is usually unilateral mechanical irritation that produces root pain in the same distribution may also give rise to hypoesthesia in the same distribution, paralysis of the muscles supplied by sciatica nerve ( flexors of the knee and all the muscle below the knee) and absence of ankle jerk.
Most of the cases are due to irritation of the roots of the sciatica nerve (lumbar 4,5 sacral 1,2,3) the commonest cause of such irritation is prolapsed intervertebral disc. The patients are generally under 40 years of age
The other conditions which may cause sciatica include osteoarthritis of the spine, vertebral tumor, the pelvic tumor, and meningioma, ankylosing spondylitis, tuberculosis, of the vertebral bodies or the sacroiliac joint.
